Join our team: Analytics Engineer

We’re looking for a new Analytics Engineer to come and join our team at Data Orchard CIC.

Applications will be particularly welcomed from those with knowledge and expertise in extracting, managing, and analysing data from a range of digital tools. The ideal person will have expertise in analysis tools, an understanding of coding, analytical and problem solving skills, be curious and questioning and pay attention to detail.

Since 2013 Data Orchard has become established as one of the UK’s leading pioneers in supporting organisations to build their data capabilities. We have a small team of five employees and a range of associates who work on 30-40 projects a year with clients in the charity, housing, public and social enterprise sectors.

Job Description

Job title: Analytics Engineer

Salary: £35,000 - £45,000

Responsible to: Co-Chief Executive (Sian Basker)

Location: Predominantly remote working either from home or nearby co-working office space.

Contract: Full Time

Hours: 35 hours per week worked flexibly Monday to Friday.

Contract type: Permanent

Overall purpose of job

  • To provide technical support for the development and delivery of the company’s products and services, including maintenance and validation of our Data Maturity Assessment benchmarking, to clients and partners.

  • To manage and maintain the company’s data assets and data flows ensuring they are efficient, secure, reusable and reproducible.

  • To oversee the collection, analysis and presentation of the company’s data to evaluate our impact in achieving our strategic goals and social mission.

  • To ensure, in partnership with the Data Protection Officer that the ICT infrastructure and associated policies and procedures provide appropriate mitigation of data security risks.

  • To provide data cleaning, analysis and engineering on client projects as part of our outsourced data team.

Specific responsibilities

  • Liaise with clients on projects, including delivery of data maturity assessments, facilitating and presenting at workshops (mostly online).

  • Data cleaning, preparation, and analysis to support the team on a range of internal and client projects.

  • Oversee product development, security and technical performance with external web developers.

  • Manage administrative responsibilities and master datasets for all digital systems, tools and data assets.

  • Map, document and implement processes (automating where appropriate) to ensure the efficient flow and visibility of our business data across systems.

  • Maintain quality and integrity of the code for data products (e.g. Data Maturity Assessment) and its future longevity and adaptability.

  • Data management, merging and manipulation of datasets, including use of publicly available open data sets.

  • Data visualisation to demonstrate patterns and trends and communicate in accessible ways to different audiences, including interactive dashboards.

  • Draft reports (e.g. annual report and impact evaluation), blogs and presentations for publication.

  • Participate in learning and building our specialist knowledge and skills.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the company’s processes, tools, products, services, and impact evaluation.

  • Research and test new tools and systems.


Personal skills and attributes

Essential

Professional skills and expertise: At least two years work experience in a relevant professional role with demonstrable understanding of research, statistical methods and data tools.

Communication: Communicate clearly in writing and verbally, with good presentation skills. Relate well to people with differing perspectives. Able to communicate information to technical and non-technical audiences. Able to build positive relationships and work well within a team.

Data science and engineering: Proficiency in coding, especially R (though others like Linux and Python would be helpful) and best practices in code management and development such as using Git. Experience in bringing data together from systems either through in-built or custom integrations (e.g. using APIs).

Analytical and problem-solving skills: Understand how to apply analytical techniques to data. Synthesise and present clear findings that colleagues and clients can understand and use. Know when and how to involve the team in analysis and synthesis.

Analysis tools: Knowledge and experience of a range of statistical analysis tools including spreadsheets, R and dashboarding tools such as Shiny.

Data visualisation and presentation: Know how to use the most appropriate medium to visualise data to tell compelling stories.

Data governance: Understand the management and organisation of data and data assets, including quality, security, usability and accessibility.

Curious and questioning: Curious and questioning approach when thinking about data and how to explore it. Evidence based approach to certainty and uncertainty in data.

Organised and systematic: Logical, structured approach to making sense of data.

Attention to detail: Meticulous and exacting in ensuring data quality, identifying and checking detail. Recognise and identify appropriate ways to collect, collate and prepare data.

Self-motivated: Uses initiative and self-motivated to explore and learn to develop knowledge and skills, and to share these.

Time management: Able to manage your time and work priorities and identify and reach out when you need support.

Desirable

Work experience: Experience of working and/or volunteering in the nonprofit/social sector.

Experience of organising, delivering and facilitating online workshops and events: Familiarity with using MS Teams, facilitating discussions within mixed audiences, and handling difficult dynamics or technical issues with confidence.

Data productisation: Experience of turning existing analysis and processes into data products.

IT management: Experience of managing IT infrastructure, budgets, policies and planning to ensure stable, secure and fit for purpose IT infrastructure in a small company.

IT support: Experience of supporting and training staff in use of ICT infrastructure, troubleshooting with tech suppliers where relevant.

Security and protection: Experience of Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certification.

CRM/Database Experience: Experience of using and managing databases and/or CRM systems.

Experience of impact measurement: Experience of measuring impact and evaluating outcomes.

Pension

Data Orchard offers a staff pension scheme. This requires a contribution of 5% of your gross earnings which Data Orchard will match with 4%. If you wish to contribute over and above this percentage, you may do so.

Holidays

The holiday entitlement for full time employees is 25 days per year plus 8 bank and public holidays, with an increase of one day per year of service (up to a maximum of 5). Your holiday entitlement will be pro-rata to your hours of work if you work part time. The holiday year runs from 1st April to 31st March. Holiday entitlement for this post is 33 days per annum FTE.

Parental Leave

All pregnant employees are entitled to take up to 26 weeks ordinary maternity leave and up to 26 weeks additional maternity leave. Salary will be replaced by statutory maternity pay if you are eligible to receive it. Paternity, shared parental and adoption leave meet statutory requirements.

Probationary Period

All new appointments are subject to a probationary period of 3 months.
