Data literacy for Everyone
Over six weeks, in digestible 1 hour sessions, we will work closely with your organisation to build comfort and confidence working with data. Through active learning, participants will be able to build a shared vocabulary around key concepts, a vital appreciation for the considerations that go into data collection and analysis, and a critical eye for interpreting and representing data effectively.
About the course
For an organisation to get better at using data, everyone in the organisation needs to be confident in collecting and interpreting data.
Some people need specific skills in data analysis or data processing. This course is not for those people.
It is for people not in specific ‘data’ roles. It builds a solid grounding in data literacy by introducing key concepts around data collection, data analysis and data storytelling in an accessible and enjoyable way.
It is delivered in bite-sized chunks. Each one-hour workshop covers one topic by inviting participants to write a duet or create a data game. It is about participating in fun activities and reflecting on what you have learned.
Programme details
During this data literacy course, participants will explore, understand and be confident discussing:
Data collection. Participants will consider everyday data that we may take for granted and, in doing so, confront the messiness and promise of data. We will review different types of data, the cleaning necessary to make sense of survey data, and considerations of ethics and privacy in data collection.
Question framing. To make meaning of data, it’s important to start with a good question. This session will review the types of questions that can be asked of each type of data, and participants will practice asking such questions beginning with organisational priorities.
Data exploration. Making meaning of data is an iterative process, with questions initiating inquiry into available data and available data helping to refine questions. This session will provide participants with an opportunity to practice exploring sample data and refining questions using that data.
Data visualisation. Effective data visualisations speak directly to their audience of focus, leverage small choices, and deliver key insights clearly and creatively. In this session, we will review key techniques used in data visualisations to tailor themselves to specific audiences and goals.
Making data-based arguments. Once we have data-based insights, it is important that we consider how best to reach our audiences. In this session, we will walk through different types of data stories that can be told, and practice convincing stakeholders of our points-of-view using data and other forms of evidence and argumentation.
Data storytelling. The series concludes by synthesising previous learning, revisiting the many types of data visualisations in our toolkits and the value of these for different types of audiences and goals. We will then take an existing infographic and create ways to remix it using different data visualisation techniques.
