Supporting Farleigh Hospice to develop a data strategy

Client: Farleigh Hospice
Date: February — November 2024
Work: Data maturity, Data strategy

About the organisation

Farleigh Hospice is a local charity providing care and support to adults living with life-limiting illnesses and their families and carers across mid Essex. They commissioned us to assess their organisational data maturity and develop a strategy for improvement.

What we did

We ran an Organisation Data Maturity Assessment which was completed by 77 staff from 19 teams.

The ‘live launch’ workshop captured issues, challenges, and ideas from 54 staff. We also facilitated a workshop with 13 leaders to reflect on the assessment results and outline actions for improvement. We later facilitated discussions with eight key stakeholders to prioritise the proposed actions, outline analysis and insight required, and consider future use of data.

To complement this, semi-structured interviews were conducted by and with staff to understand in more detail the use of data across different areas of the business, the culture around data and digital, and the opportunities and barriers to using data effectively.

Sarah Green, Chief Executive at Farleigh Hospice said:

“The team understood our needs, were able to tailor to our specific aims and were adaptable to changes. They obviously had much relevant experience to draw upon which was directly applicable to what we needed to do.”

We presented Farleigh Hospice with a comprehensive set of outputs including interpretation of their assessment results, synthesis of their aspirations for the future, and a clear data strategy and roadmap with short-, medium- and long-term priorities.

As a result of the work, Farleigh Hospice report they have:

  • An improved shared understanding about data in the organisation

  • An increased understanding of gaps in skills and roles

  • Been able to make plans about how to improve with data

Next steps

Farleigh Hospice have said they will use the outputs of this project to:

  • Evidence impact and need

  • Improve services

  • Increase efficiency

  • Secure data resources (e.g. roles, skills, tools, consultancy)

  • Inform future planning and strategy

Sarah said:

“Data Orchard were professional, thorough and responsive. The strategy has given us structure, and a clear process defined by measurable steps to achieve in reshaping our approach to data use across the hospice.”
