Work: Research into domestic violence

In 2015, Data Orchard was commissioned by West Mercia Women’s Aid to do some research on domestic violence and abuse in Herefordshire, funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The aim was to improve understanding of domestic violence and abuse in ethnic minorities in Herefordshire, and explore whether there are barriers faced by minority group victims accessing the support they need.

We began with a literature review of national and international research on the topic. This was followed by analysis of service activity data from Women’s Aid, West Mercia police and local authority children’s services. The project assessed the strategic context using national and open data sources on domestic violence and abuse from Police, Government, Public Health and Women’s Aid. The research identified rates and trends, as well as gaps in service provision and engagement with minority communities.

The key findings and recommendations on changes and improvements to services (and data) were presented at several partnership events and forums. Data Orchard also presented at a 'Silent Victims' conference in October 2016 - convened by the Community Safety Partnership to raise awareness on the topic and engage providers from a range of sectors. An example of research used to inform action by front-line services.

Jan Frances, previously Chief Executive WMWA said at the time (17/09/2015):

"It was a pleasure to work with Data Orchard on this project. The parameters of the project were fully discussed and they took on board all our requirements and kept us fully informed as the work proceeded.
When the draft report was submitted, Data Orchard were quick and helpful about taking on comments and suggestions, and incorporating changes. The final report was very well received by our Board of Trustees and by the multi-agency steering group on Domestic Violence and Abuse in Herefordshire.
We have used the report in funding applications and it is proving to be extremely useful to highlight gaps in service provision. We are looking forward to working with Data Orchard again."
