Case study: research

Client: Herefordshire Community Foundation
Date: 2018
Work: Collect and analyse new data

Herefordshire Community Foundation is part of the charitable trusts and foundation sector and provides grants to support local communities.

They hired Data Orchard to produce a robust analysis of needs, exploring indicators such as: deprivation, wage levels, housing, economy, education and learning, health, environment, safety and strong communities.

The resulting ‘Vital Signs’ report presents a robust analysis of social needs and was used as a philanthropy guide to inform charitable giving and strategic responses to complex problems. It also received considerable local media attention and led to wider debate among senior stakeholder partners in the county.

They did the whole thing and had a fantastic grasp on the issues and local data.
— Philippa Spens, CEO, Herefordshire Community Foundation.

“Data Orchard’s team were extremely easy to deal with and were very happy to come to meetings with my Chairperson (sometimes at notice). Getting Vital Signs researched and published was a priority when I started in this role so finding Data Orchard (via a colleague at another grant-making foundation) was a godsend. They did the whole thing and had a fantastic grasp on the issues and local data. In future we may well commission more as this research threw up some significant gaps.” Philippa Spens, CEO, Herefordshire Community Foundation.
